  • Resident Evil: Retribution, the fifth film in the action franchise, opened in first place at the weekend box office. Milla Jovovich once again stars as the warrior Alice, who must stop an evil corporation's deadly virus that turns people into flesh-eating zombies. Opening in second place was the 3-D release of the 2003 animated family blockbuster Finding Nemo, while last week's top movie, The Possession, fell to third place.
  • Arbitrage, starring Richard Gere as a hedge fund billionaire dealing with scandals that could destroy him, opened in 12th place in limited release.
  • The drama The Master, which just won several of the top awards at the Venice Film Festival, made just under $730,000 in five theaters in New York and Los Angeles, setting a new record per-screen average of $145,949. Director Paul Thomas Anderson's film stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as a charismatic cult leader and Joaquin Phoenix as his protege. ...

  • The Possession was the Number One film for the second week in a row, topping a very weak box office that was the lowest-grossing weekend this year -- typical for the weekend after Labor Day -- but, at an estimated $67 million total, also the worst since the weekend after 9/11 more than a decade ago. It was also the first time since 2008 that no film made more than $10 million.
  • Opening in third place was The Words, starring Bradley Cooper as an aspiring writer who finds a manuscript and passes it off as his own. He finds success and fame with the book, but then the real author, played by Jeremy Irons, surfaces and threatens to destroy his reputation. Co-starring are Zoe Saldana and Dennis Quaid.
  • The weekend's other new wide release, The Cold Light of Day, opened out of the top 10 at Number 13. Henry Cavill,...

THE MORNING AFTER…

  • As if weddings don't have enough memorable moments for the photographer to document, here comes a new trend: photos of the couple on the morning after the wedding. One New Jersey based photographer who specializes in morning after photos, Michell Jonne, said she likes to "push the limits" during the session, but keep her clients laughing. Jonne said she got the idea after seeing the Emporio Armani ads featuring real-life married couple David and Victoria Beckham in their underwear. She charges about $650 for the service.
